From all corners of this great nation, tens of thousands of footy fans came together in solidarity flocking to arguably one of the greatest sporting arenas in the World - the Melbourne Cricket Ground otherwise known as the MCG. Those who couldn’t fit into the live matches stadium migrated west towards the docklands stadium. The energy in Footscray that day was equally as electrifying as the MSG. The Western Bulldogs being a relatively young and inexperienced team have for a long time now deprived their unexpecting fans a cup.
Though little did they know, the league would be just hours away from being historically thrown on it’s head. The underdogs truly deserved having their day! By smashing the Sydney Swans by just 22 points broke the leagues longest premiership drought of 55 years! 2016 was riddled with injury making their season the craziest emotional and physical rollercoaster since the team formed back in the mid nineteenth century, rendering their overall performance a dogs breakfast at best. The heaviest casualty was the round 3 knockout of the clubs star captain Robert Murphy. Despite being crippled on the sideline Murphy showed great courage leading his team to victory, and ultimately earning him Jock McHale Medal, which was passed down to him from coach Luke Beveridge.
As you can see in these selected brotographs, the media had an absolute field day celebrating the clubs triumphant story. The clubs legendary resident ghost ancestor Con McCarthy is said to be still haunting the grounds of the Docklands footy oval. Some eye witnesses had seen him later that evening and they say that he was proud of the boys for defeating arch nemesis’s Sydney Swans, and reminisced over leading his boys to win a back to back 1923 and 1924 VFA premierships, which in the end was what gained the Dogs entry into the VFL.
We here in Saint Albans believe that the true cause of this victory was the support that the teams official mascot Sid the Dog gave throughout the season.
